Living with Diabetes

Information and support for children, young people, and families navigating life with diabetes.

Understanding Diabetes in Children

Receiving a diabetes diagnosis for your child can feel overwhelming. Type 1 diabetes is the most common type diagnosed in children and requires managing insulin levels, usually with injections (pens) or an insulin pump.

It's important to learn the common signs. Remember to always consult a doctor if you have concerns. Common symptoms in children can include:

  • Being really thirsty
  • Needing to wee a lot, especially at night
  • Feeling more tired than usual
  • Losing weight without trying
  • Getting thrush or other infections often

Empower T1D provides educational resources and workshops to help families understand the condition and its management.

Emotional Well-being & Family Life

A diabetes diagnosis affects the whole family. Children might feel confused, scared, or different. Parents and carers often face new stresses and challenges. Siblings might also need support understanding the changes.

Open communication is key. It's important to acknowledge everyone's feelings and create a supportive home environment. Remember, you're not alone. Connecting with other families facing similar challenges can be incredibly helpful.

At Empower T1D, our community events and camps offer opportunities for families to connect, share experiences, and build a supportive network.

Managing Diabetes Day-to-Day

Diabetes at School

Ensuring your child receives the right support at school is vital. This involves working with the school to create an individual healthcare plan, training staff, and ensuring your child feels confident managing their diabetes during the school day. Resources are available to help advocate for your child's needs.

Physical Activity

Having diabetes shouldn't stop children from being active! Exercise is important for everyone. Learning how to manage blood glucose levels around sports and playtime is part of living well with diabetes. Our programs often incorporate fun, physical activities in a supportive setting.

Childcare & Trusting Others

It can be challenging to trust others with your child's care. Planning ahead, providing clear instructions, and ensuring caregivers (family, friends, babysitters) are trained and confident is essential for peace of mind.
