About Empower T1D

Our mission is to improve the lives of those affected by Type 1 Diabetes through education, support, and hands-on experiences with animals.

Our Story

Empower T1D was founded in 1994 by Kerie Coutts, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 12. Having experienced the challenges of living with diabetes firsthand, Kerie recognized the need for comprehensive support for children and their families.

What began as a small initiative at the Hampshire Riding Therapy Centre has grown into a renowned charity that has touched the lives of thousands of children with diabetes across the UK.

Today, Empower T1D continues to provide educational programs, workshops, and camps at Morelands Copse Camping, creating a supportive environment where children can learn about diabetes management while enjoying meaningful interactions with animals.

Kerie Coutts

Founder & Director

Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 1977 at the age of 12, Kerie has devoted her life to helping children with diabetes through education and support. Her experience as both a diabetes patient and a healthcare educator gives her a unique perspective on the challenges faced by children and families living with diabetes.

Kerie's background in working with horses and her understanding of how animals can provide therapeutic benefits led to the creation of PPEDS, where she combines her passion for animal care with her commitment to diabetes education and support.
